WHAT ABOUT EXPERTS?

21.01.2011
At Faculty of Food and Biochemical Technology of Institute of Chemical Technology Prague was written in 2006 the analysis by the leader of Dairy and Fat Technology - Doc. Ing. Vladimír Filip Csc., it is about the two types of cannabis oil and that it is extracted of the same seed-lot of cannabis seeds but in different ways. Analysis was focused on content of free fatty acids (fFA), substances of unsaponifiable share (US), dyes (carotenoids and chlorophyll) and phospholipides and also on determination of oxidation stability of both oil types.Doc.Ing. Filip in the analysis says: "Any oil type is virtually not different from each other in content of free fatty acids (within analytic mistakes) which confims the fact that it is the oil extracted form one seed-lot and it analogously confirms also the content of sterols in sterol fraction."

And what about experts?

At Faculty of Food and Biochemical Technology of Institute of Chemical Technology Prague was written in 2006 the analysis by the leader of Dairy and Fat Technology - Doc. Ing. Vladimir Filip Csc., it is about the two types of cannabis oil and that it is extracted of the same seed-lot of cannabis seeds but in different ways. Analysis was focused on content of free fatty acids ( fFA), substances of unsaponifiable share (US), dyes ( carotenoids and chlorophyll ) and phospholipides and also on determination of oxidation stability of both oil types.Doc.Ing. Filip in the analysis says: ''Any oil type is virtually not different from each other in content of free fatty acids (within analytic mistakes) which confims the fact that it is the oil extracted form one seed-lot and it analogously confirms also the content of sterols in sterol fraction.''

Cold pressed Cannabis oil is used in formulas of czech company Cannabis Pharma-derm which developes, produces and supplies the market with special curative cannabis cosmetics under the label Cannaderm.

Cold pressing is method where by use of well defined press, temperature (under 45°C) and rubbing is released the oil. Oil is mechanically pured and further taped and stored in protective atmosphere. Extraction by carbon dioxide at above critical state is technique which uses qualities of gaseous CO2 for separation of the oil. On temperatures above 31°C CO2 can not be liquefied by any increasing of temparature and the gas in such state has a high solvent ability that can be adjusted by changes of press and temperature. By reduction of the press in separator is instantly lowered the solvent ability of CO2 and extract is separated.

Deductions and analysis

end up very favorably for the cannabis seed oil. Results of analysis are comparable on both examples, in amount of Omega 3 and Omega 6 unsaturated fatty acids that can be considered as main effective substances with demonstrable positive effect on condition of skin and organism. Comparable is also content of sterols. Differences between contents were ed only on unsaponifiable portion, dyes and phospholipids. It seems that it is more benefitial to extract the oil by the cold press method because the increased content of natural antioxidants has positive effects not just on human organism but also on quality and stability of oil itself as the main ingredience for production of cosmetics.

Note for a perceptive reader

From results of analysis clearly arises that method of extraction of oil from cannabis seeds has a relatively small influence on it's final quality and content of those substances that are considered as effective in impact on human skin. Measuring data of contained antioxidants speak better for the cold press method of cannabis sativa seed oil. Cannabis seed is a natural product and so values of some substances can fluctuate during the year according to harvest, quality of manufacturing of seeds and according to the climate.

So it is clear that arguments of some producers about effect of one or another type of oil are directly in conflict with indipendent expert analysis and measurements. Quality of cosmetics made of cannabis sativa seed oil in necessary to judge especially according to quality of used cannabis oil, it's quantity in formula and according to content of other substances. Cannabis leave on the cover or the word cannabis in the name themselfs do not guaratee the quality of such cosmetics! Content of Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil is sometimes declared on the cover look at the seal of Curative Cannabis on cosmetics Cannaderm or you can find out (but only approximately) from list of ingredients. In ingredients (or INCI) must be the pure cannabis oil mentioned as Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil.

We keep at disposal the results of the study and here are sumed up it's conclusions:

Doc.Ing. Filip in the analysis says:

The oils are virtually not different from each other in content of fatty acids (within analytic mistakes) which confims the fact that it is the oil extracted form one seed-lot and it analogously confirms also the content of sterols in sterol fraction. Oils are also not different in term of content of free fatty acids because they are melted in the cells of the seeds in oil. Cannabis oil contains i.a. 3% of γ-linolenic acid that, beside other polyene acids, is valued as biologically effective substance, both in view of nutrition and use in cosmetic preparations. Examined oils contain different concentrations of substances of unsaponifiable portion (including sterols), dyes and phopholipids.
Cannabis sativa seed oil extracted by cold pressing method so contains lower contents of substances of unsaponifiable portion (but comparable amount of sterols), lower concentration of chlorophyl colourings and higher concentration of phospholipids and carotenoids. Such differences are given by effect of CO2 on these substances contained in cell membranes (phopholipids), or in other cell parts (green colourings in chloroplasts). Of biologically lipide-active substances was defined the content of sterols that is comparable in both oils (about 0,3%). Content of phospholipids is relatively low in both oils. Such low concentrations won't influence significantly sensoric properties of both oils (in a negative sence), but at the same time can even in such low levels positively influence the oxidation stability especially on cold pressed oil because they effect as secondary antioxidants (cold pressed oil contains 4times more phopholipids).

Carotenoid colourings are, in such concentrations, considered also as antioxidants cold-pressed oil contains about twice as much of them as oil extracted by super-critical extraction. On the other hand the chlorophyl colourings (pheophytines) can in certain conditions act as pro-oxidants. In such view, the oil extracted by supercritical method contains by half more pro-oxidants. The result of tested oxidation stability (Oil Stability Index) is clear. Cannabis oil gained by cold pressing method assigns almost 4times higher level of oxidation stability.
